Some interesting but lesser known and underrated characters of Ramayana.

themiskhtime

Ramayana is one of the largest ancient epics in World literature and considered as Adi-kavya (first poem) in Hindu tradition. It has a great influence on Hindu life and culture depicting the duties of relationships; portraying the characters with Idealism. (Ideal father, ideal brother, ideal servant, ideal husband, ideal king etc.)

Here presenting you some interesting still lesser known and underrated characters of Ramayana...

URMILA:

Urmila, the younger sister of Sita is often referred as the forgotten heroine because of little reference in the Epic. She as per Laxman's word stayed at Ayodhya and accepted her husband's share of sleep from Nidra Devi during exile period. Otherwise Laxman would never win over Meghnad without Urmila's sacrifice.

BALI:

Bali, son of Indra Dev was blessed with a boon that whenever he will face someone in war, half power of his opponent will be transferred to him. Which means virtually it's impossible to win over and kill him. Interesting fact is that he has defeated Mahabali Ravana and travelled quite a long distance holding Ravana's head under his armpit.

NALA & NILA:

Nala is the son of Vishwakarma while Nila is the son of Agni Dev. Both of these played pivotal role in construction of Ramasetu over Indian Ocean. Nala was blessed with great knowledge of architecture. On the other hand Nila was cursed by a sage "anything he throws in water will not sink" & this acted as a boon for Ram & his army. Finally the Ramsetu was constructed successfully with coordinated efforts.

TRIJATA:

Trijata, the daughter of Vibhisana, is the demoness who stood by and protected Sita when Ravana abducted her. She always supported Sita and saved her from the harassing and scary behaviour of other demons. In every meeting Trijata was reassuring Sita that her husband would surely come to rescue her from the clutches of the evil king. She indeed deserves much appreciation because of her support towards the virtue side Irrespective of her Demon family background.

SHANTA:

Most of us don't have much knowledge about Shanta, the daughter of Dasharatha & adopted daughter of Romapada, the king of Anga. She was excellent in Vedas, arts, craft as well as in warfare, and was considered to have been very beautiful. There came a time when kingdom Anga was cursed by Indra. Meanwhile, Dasharatha wanted a son to continue his legacy and to enrich his royal dynasty. It was advised that the troubles of both kingdoms could only be alleviated by yagna performed by a brahmin with powers that come from observance of perfect chastity and that the only such person was Rishyasringa. Then Shanta took the risk of impressing the sage despite of the fear of his powers and married to Rishyasringa. Ultimately she saved her kingdom as well as fulfilled Dashratha's wish. ( Because Putra kameshthi yagna was performed by Rishyasringa.)
